Weekend route · Vilnius

Vilnius in 36 hours — less checklist, better city.

A 36-hour Vilnius itinerary that uses the city’s walkability, food and live events instead of cramming every attraction into one weekend.

Make it yoursVilnius 36h coreLoad the curated anchor stops into My Lithuania, then remove, reorder or add your own.
The point: Vilnius rewards walking and bad itinerary discipline. The city is compact enough that the best 36 hours feel improvised — but only after somebody has quietly removed the stupid choices.
FRI · 17:00

Start south, not at the Cathedral if you arrive by train.

Halės Market / Gate of Dawn gives the Old Town a direction instead of a sightseeing loop. If you arrive from the airport or by car, reverse it.

20:00

Dinner should match the night, not the rankings.

One serious restaurant if the meal matters. Otherwise save the money for the Saturday. Vilnius has enough good food that “Michelin or failure” is a ridiculous rule.

SAT · 09:30

Old Town with context, then leave postcard mode.

Cathedral / university / Jewish and state-history layers, then Užupis or MO depending on weather and appetite for museums.

17:00

Use the evening for the thing that only exists on your dates.

City Fiesta, jazz, gastronomy week, Christmas or the Light Festival can be worth rearranging dinner and museum timing around. Check What's On, not just Google “things to do”.

SUN · 09:00

Trakai only if you have the time to make it more than a castle errand.

With an early departure, stay in Vilnius. With half a day, use the Trakai guide and decide whether the museum, lake or food is actually your reason to go.

Vytas' verdict

Vilnius does not need more attractions. It needs better sequencing.

36 hours works: extremely well.

Best upgrade: build one evening around a live event or a genuinely good dinner.

Worst upgrade: spending Saturday in taxis between places that were already walkable.

First time

History + food

Old Town, Jewish/Litvak context, Užupis, one modern dinner and no car.

Winter

Museum + sauna + lights

Short daylight becomes a feature if the evening has a reason to exist.

Third visit

Neighbourhoods + events

Stop proving you saw the Cathedral and use the city like a city.
