Lithuania is good value. It is not 2008.
Vilnius still lets you eat, move and experience a European capital for sensible money, but the useful question is no longer “is Lithuania cheap?” It is “what is actually worth paying for?”
Price without context is useless.
A €150 dinner can be excellent value. A €14 tourist lunch can be terrible value.
The biggest variable: accommodation — especially Nida in high summer.
The easiest savings: public transport, trains booked early, walking, good casual lunch, and not renting a car before geography needs one.
The stupidest savings: losing an hour to avoid a €12 taxi when you have two holiday days left.
Start with prices that are actually published.

What eating out feels like now.
June 2026 crowd-sourced benchmarks put a typical inexpensive restaurant meal at about €13 in Vilnius and €10.99 in Kaunas; mid-range three-course dinner for two without drinks around €65 and €62 respectively. Use these as orientation, not a menu.

From a Vilnius base, public transport is so cheap that accommodation and food dominate your city-day budget.
Simple room, casual food, trains/buses, mostly free walking, one paid attraction. Still a holiday.
Comfortable hotel, good dinner, taxis when useful, admissions and room for one experience without calculating every coffee.
Boutique stay, serious dining, private boat/sauna or a day with local company, plus the luxury of removing friction.
High-summer accommodation can move well above national averages. Book early or go in May, June or September and the value equation improves dramatically.

Lithuania's restaurant scene is one of the easiest places to feel the quality leap versus more expensive Western European capitals.
A taxi that saves a bad hour.
Airport, rain, late dinner, tired children. Convenience can be excellent value.

Art Deco with context, a private boat, a sauna ritual, classical music at Pažaislis — spend on the memory, not the markup.
A car sitting in a city.
Vilnius and Kaunas are where a rental car can turn into paid parking with a steering wheel. Rent when the countryside or coast makes it useful.
